Mechanical vs. Electronic: what CARB certification actually means

All 9 models on this site are CARB-certified for ozone safety — 6 use purely mechanical filtration, 3 use ozone-capable technology tested under CARB's strict limit. Here's exactly what that split means, checked directly against CARB's own list, not a badge on a box.

1. What CARB certification actually is

Since 2010, every portable indoor air cleaning device sold in California has to be certified by the California Air Resources Board for ozone emissions — and because manufacturers don't build California-only versions, that means every unit sold nationally, in practice. It's a mandatory safety floor, not a premium feature a manufacturer opts into. CARB tests each device's ozone output and certifies it only if it stays at or below 0.050 parts per million, the same limit for every device, regardless of what technology it uses to clean air.

This is a completely different certification from AHAM Verifide, which we cover on the individual review pages — AHAM tests CADR, how much air a unit actually moves. CARB tests ozone safety. A model can be independently strong on one and unlisted on the other; they're not the same registry and don't measure the same thing.

2. Mechanical vs. Electronic — the actual difference

CARB sorts every certified device into one of two categories, and the split is about the underlying technology, not a grade:

Both categories are certified. Both have to clear the same ozone-safety bar. The difference is the mechanism, not the outcome CARB is checking for.

3. Why "Electronic" isn't a red flag

It's easy to read "Electronic" next to "ozone" and assume that's the unit to avoid. That's not what the classification means, and it's worth being direct about it: a CARB-certified Electronic device has already passed the same ozone test a Mechanical device passes by not using that technology at all. The certification exists specifically so that ozone-capable technology can be sold safely — it's the regulatory answer to the concern, not a warning label on it.

In practice, every Electronic-classified model we recommend on this site ships with its ionizing or "activated oxygen" mode as a switchable, optional feature, and the review pattern is consistent: owners who prefer a purely mechanical experience turn it off and never notice a difference in odor or dust control, because the HEPA and carbon stages underneath are doing that work either way. 4. Why this matters more for birds and small pets

Avian respiratory systems are unusually efficient at gas exchange, which is exactly what makes them unusually sensitive to airborne irritants generally — not specifically to CARB-certified ozone levels, but as a category, birds tolerate less margin for error than a cat or dog. That's covered in full in our bird safety guide, and it's the reason our default recommendation for a bird household is a Mechanical unit specifically, even though every model here, Mechanical or Electronic, clears the same mandatory certification.

If you already own an Electronic-classified unit and share the house with a bird, the practical fix isn't replacing it — it's switching off the ionizing or ozone-generating mode, which every model on this site allows. That removes the one variable the Mechanical-first recommendation is protecting against, without needing to requalify the whole purchase.

Every EO number below was looked up directly onCARB's own certified device listand cross-checked against each product's actual model number, not just its brand or marketing name — CARB often lists only an internal model number, which doesn't always match the retail name. Every row in the table above was checked directly against CARB's live certified device list at ww2.arb.ca.gov, matched by exact model number where CARB lists one (not the retail marketing name, which CARB frequently doesn't use), and cross-referenced against each product's own listed specifications to confirm the model number match. Verified 2026-08-13.

One caveat worth stating plainly: the Levoit Core 300-P's CARB record is filed under the base "Core 300" platform name (EO G-19-112), not a separate "-P" filing — CARB certifies at the underlying-hardware level, and the "-P" designation is a Levoit retail/marketing distinction, not a different physical device. Every other model's EO number matches an exact model-number filing.

CARB status doesn't change on a schedule the way filter prices do — a certification, once granted, doesn't need re-checking the way a manufacturer's filter price does — so we don't expect to re-verify this table as frequently as our filter-cost numbers. We'll re-check any model whose CARB record we can't otherwise confirm, and re-check the whole table whenever a new model is added to the site.
