Start here if you only read one thing
Pet air quality is three separate problems, and the product that solves one is not automatically the product that solves the others.
- Hair and dander are particles. HEPA handles them, and what decides the result is airflow: enough clean air delivered per hour for the room you actually put it in.
- Litter box and dog smell are gases. Only a genuine activated carbon stage touches those. A grey mesh described as carbon-impregnated is not one.
- Hair also kills filters. In a shedding household the pre-filter is the part that decides your annual cost, because a washable one gets rinsed and a disposable one gets bought.
The pick for most pet homes

Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max
4.4/5What the registry says about each one
CADR is cubic feet per minute of clean air delivered. Higher is faster, and faster is what lets a unit keep up with an animal that sheds all day. The figures below are the verified ones.
| Model | Verified CADR | Coverage | Filters per year, maker's own price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max | 435 cfm | 674 sq ft | $93 |
| AirDoctor AD3500 | 340 cfm | 815 sq ft | $172 |
| Winix 5520 | 253 cfm | 392 sq ft | $80 |
| Levoit Vital 200S-P | 250 cfm | 388 sq ft | $100 |
| PuroAir 240 | 205 cfm | 300 sq ft | $216 |
| Levoit Core 300-P | 143 cfm (box claims 195) | 222 sq ft | $60 |
| Levoit Vital 100S-P | 143 cfm (box claims 195) | 222 sq ft | $80 |

| Levoit Core Mini-P | 34 cfm (box claims 65) | 53 sq ft | $50 |
Where a model shows two numbers, the second is what the manufacturer prints. The gap is not an accusation of lying: marketing figures are often measured under conditions the registry does not accept. It is a reason to size on the first number. How we check the registry covers the method, andthe real filter cost page explains why the last column is not the price on the box either.
By animal
The general answer above holds, and each animal adds one thing it cannot cover:
- Cats: litter box ammonia is a gas, so carbon weight matters more than airflow.
- Dogs: smell comes from bedding and coat as much as from the air, sothe order you do things in decides the result.
- Birds: this is the one where the wrong unit is dangerous rather than merely useless. Birds have respiratory systems that react to things people never notice, sostart with what is safe, not with what is powerful.
- Small spaces: a studio or a single room changes the sizing question entirely.
Questions people ask
Do air purifiers actually help with pet allergies?
They address one part of it. Cat and dog allergen is carried on dander, which is particulate, and a HEPA filter captures particulate that reaches it. What a purifier cannot do is pull allergen out of soft furnishings, or out of the air in a room it is not sized for. Treat it as one of three things that matter, alongside washing textiles and keeping the animal out of the bedroom.
HEPA or carbon: which matters for pets?
Both, for different complaints. Hair and dander are particles, so HEPA handles them. Litter box ammonia and dog smell are gases, and only a real activated carbon stage touches those. A thin carbon-impregnated mesh is not a carbon stage. If odour is the reason you are shopping, weight of carbon is the specification to compare.
How big a unit do I need for a pet home?
Size to the room first, then add margin for the animals, because shedding load scales with how many there are rather than with floor area. The coverage figures in the table come from the verified CADR, not from the marketing claim, which is why some of them are lower than the box says.
Will a purifier stop my house smelling of dog?
It lowers the background, it does not end the problem. Smell that is coming from bedding, carpet or a damp coat keeps being produced, and a purifier only treats what reaches it. Our guide to stopping a house smelling of dog covers the order to do things in, and the purifier is not first.
